2020 marks the 12th year of working closely with Cameron McGill after leading him on art direction and branding for many recorded releases; vinyl, cd, digital, and merchandise. One of the many perks with establishing trusted work relationships with peer professional artists such as Cameron is that they’re more likely to push the envelope on creative thinking, strategy, and execution versus that of any business situation, problems and solutions needed. Collaborating with Cam over the years guarantees rewarding challenges that lack in conservative business environments. In doing so, a kindred friendship and mutual respect revealed itself for each other’s process and ideas. When he told me he was taking a personal hiatus from recording, releasing music, and touring to go back to school in late 2015, I was ecstatic for him and what the future may hold. It’s not often that a critically acclaimed independent songwriter wakes up and decides to do something else but that’s Cameron—always seeing the big picture in life and pausing to figure it out, and then doing something about it. Another reason why we work well together: Words with Actions.
Cameron earned his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Idaho in 2018, and began teaching poetry at Washington State University in 2019. He was in need of a major online overhaul, beginning in late 2018. A complete rebranding to include his new career path in upper Academia/Education continued throughout 2019 without abandoning an incredible amount of published recordings from his past career in music. The goal to merge the two career paths took shape by developing subdirectory sites underneath the main hub/umbrella site of CameronMcGill.com.
The amount of content, news releases, articled, reviews, and good ol’ photos and videos data which exists on Cameron’s past with a random Google search is impressive. How lucky of upper Academia and its college students to gain Cameron as their professor. He is a force of nature—a beast indeed. 2020 sees him releasing his first published book of poetry, and the word is that he has another album of recorded music underway for future release. I’m lucky to call him a friend and spirit animal, someone who consistently inspires me with his work ethic and results in return—not an easy task to do in my case.
